The World Wide Web is a network of webpages connected to each other using hyperlinks or just links. It is safe to assume that more links connecting to your web site will mean more people visiting your web site. One of the ways that search engines, such as google, work is by monitoring the number of links that connect to a page. If you think of a link as a vote, the more votes a page has, the higher up the listings it goes.

This does not mean however that by creating thousands of links to your site, it will improve its listing (infact by doing this you may adversly effect your page ranking). This is because each page that links to your page also has a ranking. Promoting links from highly ranked sites is far better than lots of links from low ranked pages.
